20 COMMON BABY PHOTOGRAPHY MISTAKES (…THAT YOUR LITTLE ONE WILL NEVER FORGIVE)

Baby photography is an exciting and engaging subject. There's no doubt. You have seen hundreds of photos of babies that have moved you or aroused a smile and surely you have ever had to photograph one or have done to photograph it. There are many pages or articles in magazines that give us advice to get better photos, even so, there are a number of very common mistakes in baby photography. And what does a good photographer do with mistakes? Learn from them, always.

That is what we are going to do in today's article, break down those common mistakes when photographing the beautiful and innocent creatures that surround us to learn how to avoid them. Do you fancy the challenge? Well here we go.

20 MISTAKES IN PHOTOGRAPHY THAT YOUR BABY WILL NEVER FORGIVE

1. USE THE FLASH

The first and most frequent of errors. Using the flash with babies has two major drawbacks, it can be harmful to them as well as scare them, and a scared baby won't make a good role model. Yes, I know, we don't always have enough light to get a good image, so I recommend that you read this article or, if you use it, always do it bouncing and with diffusers. Don't get the flash too close, let alone focus it directly on his eyes.

2. CHOOSING THE WRONG BACKGROUND

You can screw up a beautiful photo with a totally inappropriate background. If you choose a background that is too flashy, it will take away the role of the baby, just like if there are too many distractors, tangles, furniture, people... In the first photo we see a clear example of elements that divert attention and spoil the image. Everything except the baby and the carpet… Compare it with the second image.

This is the wrong background because it is too distracting for the baby

3. DRESSING THE BABY IN THE WRONG WAY

You may want to dress the creature in its best clothes, or with the pajamas that its godmother gave it, or with the most colorful items from its wardrobe. Mistake! If what you want is a memory of that garment, okay, we accept a boat, but if you want a beautiful image worthy of a good photographer, it is best that the clothes do not detract from the subject. Use smooth or soft colors that do not distract the viewer's attention.

In this photo, our gaze goes everywhere except the precious face of this baby, a shame because it is very sweet!

4. NOT PICKING THE RIGHT TIME

As you are hungry, sleepy, cold or something hurts, do not try to shoot the best photograph even remotely. He's a baby and he won't understand that you only want five minutes to photograph him. Your photos will be blurred, the baby will appear crying or with unflattering gestures, you will end your nerves and the card with images that will be of no use except to throw it away. Wait until the baby has all her needs covered and return to the charge.

5. PUT HIM IN THE ARMS OF THE OLDER BROTHER

The snapshots with the brothers are a wonderful and really tender memory, but if what you want is to give prominence to the newcomer this is not the way, since in the arms of the eldest he will look so tiny that he will lose the main role. Try to put them face to face or in some funny gesture like in the following photos.

Another example, more creative and well composed
In this image, however, all the prominence is given to the older brother, it's fine if you want the older one to stand out, but it wouldn't be if the intention was to highlight the newborn

6. THE RUSH

That rushing is not good is not something new. In this case they are not good in two senses. When our baby is born we are eager to present it to society and we take pictures of it at the slightest opportunity. If you use that photo to notify the closest relatives that everything has gone well, fine, but if what you want is to show off your offspring, don't go to the trouble of spreading his photo fresh out of the delivery room to all his friends and relatives or even post it on social media!! It will be swollen, very wrinkled, and probably also very red or purple. Wait for her skin to take on its natural color and the swelling to go down to take her first "official" portrait, she'll thank you in the future ;).
On the other hand, take the time you need to do your photo session with a baby, if you do it hasty everything will go wrong, you will get nervous and the baby will end up noticing your mood. Better a relaxed session.

7. NOT TAKING CARE OF LIGHTING

This handsome baby would look even better if you could see his face. There is a lot of natural light around and yet the face is obscured by shadows. A reflector would have helped a lot.

Example of regular lighting because the background is brighter and it is where the gaze goes and the face remains in shadow

8. TAKE SHAKY PHOTOS

It's clear, he's a baby and if he's awake he won't sit still no matter how much you ask him to. If your photos are shaky it is because the shutter speed is too low, raise it to better freeze the movement and to compensate, if they come out dark, try opening the diaphragm or raising the ISO.

9. UNFOCUSED EYES

If you are not looking to clearly highlight another detail of her face or her little body playing with the blur, focus the eyes well because they are the most important and strongest part of a portrait.

9. CUT OUT PARTS OF THE BODY OR FACE

As much as we tell you to get closer, don't get so close that you have to cut off part of the baby's face or body, except with clear interest. Cutting off an ear, chin or hand is a very common mistake but one that is very easily solvable.

10. KEEPING TOO MUCH DISTANCE AND NOT MOVING TO LOOK FOR DIFFERENT ANGLES OR PERSPECTIVES

Many times for comfort, or because we are concentrating on other tasks, or simply because of the available space, we shoot from

The closer you can see the face better ?

11. IGNORE GESTURES AND EMOTIONS

Missing out on gestures like this can make you regret it for a long time. The sleeping poses are beautiful, but do not forget that the baby begins to have her own personality and to show it with her gestures and expressions.

Life. This expression is full of life

12. FORGETTING THE IMPORTANCE OF GLITTER IN THE EYES

The glow in the eyes makes a very attractive feeling in portraits, see the difference.

A little sparkle in the eyes would have enhanced the photo.
Isn't it the same? :)) The eyes with the reflection are much more alive

13. CROOKED HORIZON

The lines in a photograph should always be straight. This photo could be wonderful, however, the crooked lines make me dizzy and make the image lose power. There will be occasions when the composition asks you to, but never be careless, please.

Caution with crooked lines, if not with a clear intention

14. SHOOT IN BLACK AND WHITE

Many of us are in love with black and white, but my advice is to shoot in color and then convert them to black and white with a computer program, otherwise you will lose a lot of useful information when processing them.

15. PRINT WITHOUT GOING THROUGH THE COMPUTER MONITOR

Impatience can lead you to go directly to the store to develop the photos with the camera card, but if you want advice, better process them before to adjust the color, brightness or other parameters. On the camera screen they may be correct, but when you see them on the monitor you can realize that they are not as you really want.

16. NOT HAVING YOUR CAMERA READY

Right now, at this moment that surprises you with their first smiles, or with a gesture that makes you fall in love, the camera is stored in its case in the depths of a closet, or you have it at hand but without a battery or with a full card... what a job! You just missed a delicious moment.

17. SLOTH

You wake up with your precious baby by your side who is there to take not one, but dozens of photos, but you are tired (or tired) and you want to continue sleeping taking advantage of this moment of peace. In a few years you will not remember that tiredness, however the photo will remain... Never leave the photos for tomorrow, the baby will grow up and there will be no going back, take advantage of every opportunity!

18. DO NOT DISCLOSE ON PAPER

Accumulating hundreds of images on the computer and not printing them is a bad habit that has spread in the digital age. Before, the impatience to see them sent us fleetingly to the developing store to be able to see the result, now we see it instantly and we are not in a hurry to develop, so we dedicate ourselves to filling the hard drive. What are you waiting for? Make a good selection and enjoy the pleasure of seeing, touching and showing off your images on paper.

19. NOT SHOOTING ENOUGH

Precisely the digital age gives us the opportunity to shoot as much as we want without having to reveal everything, shoot, shoot and shoot. The more photos you take, the more likely you are to get the ideal photo.

20. MARIO BONUS: NOT INVESTING IN A DECENT TARGET

Undoubtedly I can not stop recommending the 50mm f / 1.4

I hope this article has helped you and you can learn from these mistakes that we have all fallen into time and time again (until today, of course ? ). Can you show us your new baby photos? I am looking forward to seeing them!
