Canon EOS RP: Full Frame Mirrorless Test

Canon EOS RP: Full Frame Mirrorless Test

Introducing Canon EOS RP

The Canon EOS R mirrorless system is by far the youngest on the market, it is not even a year old! Therefore, it is not surprising that we are testing only the second model of mirrorless cameras from Canon. It's about the new Canon EOS RP. What to expect from this camera? What does he lose to the previously released EOS R? Or maybe it’s better to still shoot on a DSLR? About this in our test.

How much is?

At the time of writing, the Canon EOS RP costs about 90,000 rubles without a lens. The amount is rather big, but by the standards of modern full-frame models more than modest. The universal lens RF 24-105mm f / 4L IS USM, with which the camera came to our test, will cost about the same amount. You can save on flash drives - Canon EOS RP works with the common SD format. It remains to purchase a spare battery, because unlike the older EOS R model, the new one is equipped with an LP-E17 battery, designed for about 250 frames (using CIPA technology). So the starter kit is not so cheap. Get price Canon EOS RP By the way, the camera works perfectly with the "old" Canon EF optics through an adapter. So if you already have full-frame Canon lenses, then feel free to use the included EF-EOS R adapter.

What can?

The main advantage of the Canon EOS RP is a full-frame image sensor with a resolution of 26.2 megapixels. In all respects, the sensor is very similar to the one that we saw in the Canon EOS 6D Mark II reflex two years ago , and surprises with image quality are clearly not expected.

Unlike DSLRs, EOS RP uses phase focusing only on the image sensor using Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology. No optical viewfinder! Both face recognition and autofocus on the eyes are supported. And the claimed autofocus sensitivity is amazing - up to -5 EV.

Burst speed has become a bit more modest compared to the EOS R and EOS 6D Mark II. The new “lightweight” mirrorless can shoot up to 5 frames / s with single-frame and up to 4 frames / s with continuous autofocus. But the buffer, according to the manufacturer, holds up to 50 RAW files - a solid figure for the amateur segment. Video recording is possible in 4K at 25 frames / s, but like in EOS R, the crop factor appears here. From the entire width of the matrix, video is recorded only in Full HD.

The approach to parameter management as a whole repeats what we previously saw with EOS R. Unless the multifunctional touch panel and display on the top panel have disappeared. The main control body remains a 3 ? touch screen with a fully rotatable design and a resolution of 1.04 million pixels. And an OLED viewfinder with a resolution of 2.36 million pixels is used for sighting - also a little more modest than in more expensive cameras. Canon EOS RP has a single SD memory card with UHS-II support. Of the wireless interfaces, we hasten to mention Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. To the logical question of many amateur photographers, why two years after the release of the EOS 6D Mark II to produce a mirrorless camera so similar to it, we have two answers. Firstly, the compactness of the EOS RP looks like an undoubted advantage of this model. Secondly, RF optics compatible with EOS RP is currently better than EF lenses .
