Nevertheless, such optics do not differ in universality. Perhaps this is why the appearance of the ultra-wide-angle zoom Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS adherents of the Fujifilm X system had to wait two long years. But in the spring of 2014, he still went on sale, and immediately ended up in our test studio. Learn Price Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS Before setting off for shooting, let's get to know this model better. A person who is at least a little versed in photographic equipment is able to surprise those numbers and characteristics that are encrypted in the name of the lens. Let's start with the focal lengths. The range from 10 to 24 mm is unusually large for this class of optics. Most lenses with a focal length of 10-11 mm have a zoom ratio of less than 2x. At the same time, the developers managed to provide a constant aperture in the entire range - f / 4. But if your aperture does not seem high enough, then just look at the OIS letters in the lens name. They indicate that the lens is equipped with an optical stabilization mechanism, which means it will allow you to shoot with your hands at relatively long shutter speeds.

The optical pick-up Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS has 14 elements combined in 10 groups. To ensure high image quality, the developers used four aspherical lenses and three elements of low-dispersion glass in the optical design. As it affected the image quality - we will read a little lower. The lens turned out to be massive, especially by the standards of the Fujifilm XF line. Apparently, to facilitate the design, some of the body elements are made of plastic - the weight of the Fujinon XF 10-24mm is only 410 grams. There are three rings on the case. The widest, rubberized, is responsible for zooming. Closest to the mount allows you to change the aperture. There are no pictures and marks with aperture values on it. When the ring rotates, the aperture value will be visible on the screen or in the camera viewfinder. The third ring is focusing. It is made of metal and is closer to the front lens of the lens. Like most Fujinon XF lenses, the focus ring is not mechanically connected to the lens unit. Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS design allows the installation of filters. At the same time, the diameter of the thread for attaching the filter is not so large - only 72 mm. Just keep in mind that when buying filters for ultra wide angles it is better not to skimp and choose models with the smallest frame thickness in order to avoid vignetting.
Stabilizer switch and diaphragm setting mode selector
There are two selectors on the side of the lens: one is responsible for turning the stabilizer on and off, the other allows you to select a manual or automatic aperture value. Well, let's move on to shooting? I take the lens with me for a short walk to the city center. To understand how an ultra wide angle works, one frame is enough. Yes, it distorts the picture, enhancing the perspective. It is necessary to tilt the camera slightly down or slightly up, and then they begin to tilt towards the vertical shots. A wide viewing angle allows you to let in the frame all the space around you. Particularly spectacular look clouds. The picture is far from natural, but this is the main "trick" of any wide-angle: the images they create are unusual for the viewer's eye, and therefore look more interesting.
A wide-angle lens enhances the perspective in the frame, allows you to look at familiar landscapes in a new way

By the way, the huge viewing angle of this lens (110 degrees in wide-angle position) can play a cruel joke with the photographer: getting yourself into the frame by shooting the landscape is as easy as shelling pears! Slightly tilted the lens down - and now your legs are in the picture. I almost kept track of my own shadow, and now she is already “decorating” the photograph.

It is difficult to shoot architecture with an ultra wide angle: just raise the camera and the walls of the building begin to converge to the top, turning any structure into a triangle in the frame. But the same feature of wide-angle optics can be used as an artistic effect.

The low evening sun provokes working with backlight, and at the same time check the lens shine. With its task, the Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS copes with the solid five. Even at an open aperture, the contrast in the frame does not decrease; no flare is formed. Beginning with f / 11, “rays” appear in the sun - this is due to the reflection of light from the aperture blades: seven blades produce 14 rays in the frame. The stronger the diaphragm is closed, the more noticeable the rays. A faint flare appears on f / 22. But he does not have a serious impact on image quality. Surprisingly, I did not manage to provoke the lens further on the appearance of glare somewhat noticeable in the frame.

The second feature of the Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS, which surprised me a lot, was the complete absence of chromatic aberration in the pictures. Even in the most contrasting areas of the frame, there are no colored borders in either JPG or RAW. I admit, Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS was the first wide-angle lens without chromatic aberration, which I saw.

One of the main applications of ultra-wide-angle optics is interior photography. I decide to take a few shots at the metro station, at the same time checking the effectiveness of optical stabilization. Manually, I increase the shutter speed to 1 / 15-1 / 8 seconds and lower the ISO to 400 units. I cover the diaphragm by one step for optimal results. Let me remind you that I’m shooting with my hands. At the same time, a slow shutter speed allows you to add a bit of dynamics to the frame, blurring the movement of trains.
The stabilizer allowed hand-held shooting at a shutter speed of 1/8 s and ensured high sharpness in the frame

The second part of the shooting on the Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS I spend is no longer nature. And here is the time to talk about sharpness. From experience with other models, I know that ultra-wide angles with sharpness most often do not shine. But the Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS is surprising here. At a focal length of 10 mm in the center of the frame, the detail of the image is already high at the open aperture, closer to the edges of the frame, the sharpness naturally decreases. Aperture up to f / 5.6 improves the result: the center of the frame is already perfectly sharp, the edges and angles are slightly behind it. At f / 8 and f / 11, the lens shows the optimum result. After f / 16, diffraction already affects, and the sharpness begins to decline.

The situation is exactly the same with the 24 mm zoom position. In an open aperture, sharpness in the center of the frame is high with a slight decrease at the edges. Aperture up to f / 5.6 improves the situation. The optimal result is achieved with f / 8-f / 11.
