LITERARY RECOMMENDATION: THE PHOTOGRAPHIC VISION (EDUARDO MOMEÑE)

A new recommendation arrives from the hand of a Spanish author, Eduardo Momeñe. A recommendation that will not leave you indifferent. This is not a book like the ones we have recommended before. To give you an idea, it is a photography book without photographs (except the one on the cover). And what's interesting? Everything. In fact I think it should not be missing in your photographic learning. I tell you why.

IDEAL FOR…

Before continuing, it would be nice to tell you which audience it is intended to give you an idea of whether or not it may interest you. It is not a book for those who expect recipes. Nor is it a practical book that helps you find the best opening or exhibition, for example. Nor is it a book for whom photography is simply a means to record family memories, no matter how correct those photographs want. This is a book for those who love photography, for those who have a passion for it, for those who really want to learn Photography with capital letters, for you if you want to take an inside trip to find out which photographer you are or want to become. For you, if you think photography is a way of life, if you want one day to see your photographs exposed or published, for you if you want to get excited or tell something about your images. If you feel identified with this last description, read on, it is an indispensable book. If you are more of the first, maybe you should take a look at our other literary recommendations that are sure to be more useful;).

THE PHOTOGRAPHIC VISION (PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE FOR YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERS)

And yes, this is the title. Include the word course because it is. A course. Or as if it were. Well, this is a book that aims to instruct new photographers. While I consider the success of the title when he mentions " for young photographers " because every photographer who starts should read a book like this, I absolutely do not think it is a book only for young photographers but for ALL photographer worth his salt. For many years I have been in this world, if you have not been through learning similar to those offered by these pages before, you should read it. It is not a recipe book, from the outside in, as it may seem, but what it intends is to travel from the inside out. That you try to explore your self to find your own way of seeing and photographing your surroundings. As Momeñe says, it is more a question than answer text. It would be impossible to summarize in approximately 1000 words its 160 pages and all the wisdom it contains. But at least I will give you a small introduction by chapters, with brief brushstrokes of some of the ideas that I have been underlining by chapters, although there are many more. But for that you will have to read the book;).

INTRODUCTION

A brief introduction where he tells you what is the appropriate way to read the book.

I

A chapter of decisions, where, through some questions, you will be directed to reflect on what kind of photographer you are or want to become. Define our profile to not confuse or confuse the public.

II

A small dose of visual history. A walk through the emergence of perspective to understand the first photographic revolution and how it affected photography as we live it today. The importance of the aesthetic look and the arrival of instant photography as another determining revolution.

III

On the responsibility of wanting to make photography an art when simply looking at the paper the appearance of the world should already be fascinating and sufficient. How the historical burden of comparing photography and painting hurts us even today. Also about the importance of the photographer's own bagage when photographing, of meaning the world through a camera.

IV

Tuning in the way of becoming better photographers, of showing not the world, if not how we see it and about the need to have something to tell to reflect it in photography.

V

Brief review by some of the great photographers who knew how to write and build with their cameras. An invitation to break old prejudices.

SAW

One of the aspects he focuses on is the need to be critical and analyst with our photographs.

VII

Gestures and attitudes that tend to damage our photographs. Need to nurture culturally on the way to becoming better photographers.

VIII

On the need for containment when photographing and some enemies of good photographs.

THE BEST

Everything. I think that since my student days I had not used an underline in a book. I am one of those who think that writing in a book is almost desecrating it (#asisoyquelevoyahacer). But this time I could not resist. In the first pages I had to go for the pencil and it has accompanied the book and me throughout the reading. It has no waste.

WORST

I think there is nothing wrong with this book, or maybe yes, depending on how you look at it . It takes time. Time to deepen it, to read it accordingly. I have made a first and quick reading, to get an idea and tell you. Now I will immerse myself in a much deeper, slower, savoring it, stopping in each paragraph and investigating each of the names that appear in bold, whether they know it or not, as the author invites. The same takes months, or years, but I don't care. That is the end of this book, learning, and true learning does not happen in two days.

CONCLUSIONS

You will find numerous publications that talk to you about how to correctly take a picture (in this it is taken for granted that you know or you will know how to achieve it), but few who speak to you with a frankness and a depth like this. That they remove you from the inside and that they ask you questions so directly. If you love photography, if you feel that you cannot find your space, that your photos are missing something and it is not precisely sharpness or light, if you want to delve deeper into its meaning, in what photography has to say, you cannot stop reading This little gem. And, if you have found it interesting, do not forget to share it so that this great text reaches everyone who loves photography. Thank you!
