SIGMA 24MM F/1.4, A SAFE BET

SIGMA 24MM F/1.4, A SAFE BET

Today I have come to talk to you a little about my photographic equipment. Specifically, one of its most important parts, one of my two objectives. I can tell you that I have fallen in love with both of them even more, if possible, with photography. Can you imagine what they are? ?

Well, one is the incredible 50mm f/1.4, the one we call the king of lenses and that has undoubtedly marked a before and after, more than in my way of doing photography, in the creative possibilities it has given me.

The other is the Sigma 24mm f/1.4. After spending many years only with the 50mm (already when I was photographing analog it was my only lens), I thought that maybe it was worth giving my camera a new lens, get out of my comfort zone a little and feed my creativity a little. That you already know that you have to feed him because if he doesn't fall asleep ?

So I set out to find out what lens I needed for the type of photography I like to do. I wanted something versatile, to accompany me on my walks just like the 50mm had done up to now. I also knew that I wanted a fixed optic (yeeee I'm a bit freaky ? ), because since we wear it, we do it well ;-).

Taking into account that I needed a lens for travelling , I like documentary photography, landscape photography catches my attention , I take a lot of photos indoors of my offspring, and I'm up for a bombing ( night photography? Why not? ), I came to the conclusion that the focal length I was looking for was 24mm.

Regarding the diaphragm opening, after trying an f/1.4, how could I not try to achieve my optics with this wonderful luminosity ? It is true that you pay (and not exactly cheap) but experience (bad) has taught me to wait as long as necessary to get good photographic material.

Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Detail

Someone once said that the poor man's money is spent twice . Or what is the same, it is better to buy something of more expensive quality, but only once, than to skimp on something worse and have to buy it twice.

With that I do not mean that if you cannot buy this objective even with a few months of savings, there are no good alternatives at a much lower budget. But if you can and it fits your budget and aspirations, you won't be disappointed.

WHY THE 24MM F/1.4 FROM SIGMA?

I've already told you a bit about it in the introduction, but I'm going to try to develop it a little more.

I have mainly spoken to you about its versatility. Personally, I consider that as fixed optics, the 24mm gives me a perfect angle for many situations, because it is located between the 50mm, which is what we consider to be the most similar to the human eye, and a fish eye, which for my taste has too much angle . and complicates the compositions in the type of photography that I like to do.

Its large diaphragm opening (f/1.4) further increases this versatility that I am talking about, since it allows me to photograph situations with very little light, while maintaining more than decent speeds at a reasonably low ISO.

(You already know that the secret is learning to play with the different parameters of the exposure triangle : aperture , shutter speed, and ISO )

It is also important to note that without this large aperture it is difficult to achieve, with a wide lens, a reduced depth of field (little area in focus in the image), which, as you know, gives a lot of play in photography.

I also took into account the excellent quality of its construction, its robustness and the high-quality glass (FLD and SLD) that eliminates chromatic aberrations, vignetting and distortions to a minimum, its 9 diaphragm blades (the more blades it has, the better it is, especially to make bokeh ) its weight of 665gr (which although it seems a lot, is very good for objectives of these characteristics)

Of course I also took into account its very good value for money (the similar one from Canon and the one from Nikon are practically twice as expensive) and the good comments and recommendations that I read about it. And last but not least, I tried it before I bought it , weighed it up, put it on my camera, took some photos, and just fell in love ? .

  • ALTERNATIVES TO SIGMA'S 24MM

If you are looking for something much cheaper and/or lighter, you may be interested in a pancake lens like the one we are talking about here . It is a little less luminous but it weighs very little and costs a lot less, so it could be an alternative to take into account ?

Since this article has a lot of personal recommendation, I have compiled some photos in different situations that I have taken with this lens: indoors, outdoors, landscapes, at night, at high speeds, low speeds and at different apertures. I hope they help you to get an idea ? .

Hereyou can further explore what this lens is capable of in the hands of other photographers of all skill levels.

    CONCLUSIONS

If you are interested in a good angular fixed lens, very versatile and with many possibilities in terms of photographic styles (night photography, astrophotography, events, landscapes, documentary, indoors, etc.), if you are looking for a very good quality of image above the comfort of a zoom or a lens with less weight you can add this lens to your wish list, because I don't think you will be disappointed ?
