Construction and design
As befits professional optics, SEL24105G outwardly does not stand out against the background of dozens of its classmates. A laconic black case, many details of the exterior are made of plastic, but rubberized rings and a tube of the front lens block are metal. Naturally, the mount here is also made of metal. It is surrounded by a rubber gasket - an external sign of a waterproof design. You will not find a window with a focus distance scale here. Many fans of the Sony system have already noticed this trend: it is appearing less and less on new lenses. According to our editorial staff, this is a consequence of the use not of a ring AF drive, but of the proprietary DDSSM (Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor - direct-drive ultrasonic wave motor). Such drives proved to be excellent in the lenses we tested earlier, so the lack of a scale is not such a high price for silent and fast autofocus. The lens is equipped with a built-in optical stabilizer. Its switch, like the AF switch, is located on the body. The selector of the stabilizer operating modes is not provided. There is also an autofocus switch and a programmable button. The lens turned out to be moderately massive. The diameter of the thread of the filter is 77 mm, and the weight is 663 grams. It is hardly possible to make such optics more compact with today's technologies, but nevertheless, on the FE 24-105mm f / 4 G OSS, it looks a little cumbersome, especially with an extended zoom and a hood. By the way, a plastic hood is supplied. The zoom ring travel is tight enough so that the lens does not unfold under its own weight. This can be a hindrance when zooming during the shooting of the video, but for photography - rather a plus. The manual focus ring, as with most Sony models, is electronic with a non-linear stroke. Thanks to him, it is comfortable to focus, and the accuracy of aiming is very high.
