Sony FE 85mm f / 1.8 lens test (SEL85F18)

Introducing the Sony FE 85mm f / 1.8

Since its inception, the Sony E mirrorless system has experienced a lack of portrait optics. Yes, there were fifty dollars in it: the stabilized cropped Sony 50mm f / 1.8 OSS (SEL-50F18), and then the full-frame Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T * 55mm f / 1.8 ZA (SEL-55F18Z) . But classic portraits with focal lengths in the region of 85 mm did not appear on the market for a long time. The situation was somehow fixed by Carl Zeiss Batis 85mm F1.8. Check Price Sony FE 85mm f / 1.8 (SEL85F18) However, everything changed overnight: for 2016-2017, developers literally bombarded the adherents of the system with new optics. After the release of the magnificent Sony FE 85 mm f / 1.4 GM (SEL-85F14GM), no one even expected that another 85 mm lens would appear in the system. But Sony decided to release a competitor, Carl Zeiss Batis 85mm F1.8, and created their 85mm portrait with a much more attractive price! We will devote this review to him. Meet the Sony FE 85mm f / 1.8 (SEL85F18) .

Appearance and design

The minimalist concept inherent in modern Sony optics is fully realized in the SEL85F18 design. Nothing more, just cold ferrous metal. All external parts of the lens, including the focus ring, are made of it. Naturally, the mount here is also metal. But the round hood included in the kit is plastic. The lens can not be called a baby, it is slightly larger than the analogues created earlier by other manufacturers for SLR cameras. But he is not as gigantic as his brothers from the G Master line. Weight - 371 grams, filter diameter - 67 mm. Of the controls, only the AF switch and its lock button (the function of this button can be reprogrammed in the camera menu). The focus ring is electronic, but you can’t feel it tactilely, it works so precisely and well. The lens has dust and moisture protection, but 100% protection by the manufacturer is not guaranteed. Perhaps this is the most honest description of the protection that we have come across in technical specifications.
Optical design Sony FE 85mm f / 1.8 (SEL85F18)
The optical design is surprisingly simple by modern standards: nine elements in eight groups. There were even no aspherical lenses (it is believed that this only improves the quality of bokeh). There is one element of fine glass.

This model is not equipped with an optical stabilizer. But let's be honest, this is not always required for a portraitist: all the same, the minimum shutter speed is determined by the possible movements of the model in the frame, and not by shaking the camera in your hands. The diaphragm here is 9-bladed, so on the closed values you can count on a beautiful and calm bokeh without glare in the shape of a nut. However, let's move on to the shootings!
