Key Features EF 70-200mm f / 4L IS II USM
In mid-2018, Canon decided to simultaneously upgrade its two telephoto cameras with a focal length of 70-200 mm. Both versions with stabilizer got a new number in the name: Canon EF 70-200mm f / 4L IS II USM and Canon EF 70-200mm f / 2.8L IS III USM.

Both of these models appeared in the editorial office of Prophotos.ru, but we were the first to prepare the test of the relatively affordable EF 70-200mm f / 4L IS II USM , which is aimed primarily at advanced photographers and enthusiastic amateurs. The test of the top reporting EF 70-200mm f / 2.8L IS III USM will be published a little later.
So, what to expect from the second version of the legendary stabilized “Elka” 70-200 / 4? We have compiled the main differences between the versions in a comparison table. In the review we will try to illustrate all the strengths of the novelty with photographs.
|Canon EF 70-200mm f / 4L IS USM||Canon EF 70-200mm f / 4L IS II USM|
|Minimum Focus Distance||1.2 m||1m|
|Special lens coatings||Fluoride coating|
|Diameter of the thread of the filter||67 mm||72 mm|
|Number of aperture blades||8||9|
|Stabilizer efficiency||3 steps||5 steps|
|Maximum length||172 mm||176 mm|
|Max diameter||76 mm||80 mm|
And of course, the question is of interest. We answer: at the start of sales, an updated version of the lens costs quite a bit more expensive than its predecessor.
Construction and design
The design of the lens does not fundamentally differ from the previous version. Of course, some face-lifting and updating the exterior are present. The lens began to look in the spirit of all the latest “elek”. But in general, this is still the same relatively compact white telephoto.
It became four millimeters longer and just as thicker; the diameter of the filter increased to 72 mm. The lens comes complete with a hood and a soft case – a nice bonus.
Like many “Elks”, the EF 70-200mm f / 4L IS II USM is equipped with dust and moisture protection, which can be seen even externally: the mount has a rubber sealing ring.
The classic USM drive is used here, which means the focus distance scale has not gone anywhere. The focus and zoom rings move smoothly and lightly. Manual focus ring allows you to sharpen manually at any time.
On the side of the lens is a fairly large block of switches, which barely had enough space on the body.
Here are located: autofocus switch, stabilizer switch, on-off focus distance selector (full range or from 3 m to infinity) and a three-position stabilization mode selector. We will talk more about him in more detail.
