We got a preliminary review of the Canon EOS R with test photos.
The first camera in the officially announced today EOS R system was the Canon EOS R. The manufacturer calls it "the first, but not the last."
The Canon EOS R camera is fully compatible with EF and EF-S lenses, through appropriate adapters, and moreover, it extends their functionality. Canon believes that "the most revolutionary component in the new system is not a camera, but a mount."
The mount has an internal diameter of 54 mm, like the EF mount, but a shorter working length, which provides better illumination of the corners of the frame. Since the distance to the focal plane is reduced, the design of the lenses can be simpler, with fewer elements, and with confident control of aberrations. The bayonet has 12 electrical contacts and provides "the fastest data exchange we have ever had."
The full-frame matrix of the Canon EOS R camera has a resolution of 30.3 megapixels, made using K-MOS technology. Physical dimensions - 36x24 mm (classic "full" frame of film format 135). The maximum resolution is 6720x4480 pixels, 1.6x crop mode is also possible, then the central 11.6 million pixels work.
A DIGIC 8 image processing processor was used. The sensitivity range is from ISO 100 to ISO 40000, with an extension of up to ISO 50-102400.
A new idea is implemented in the EOS R interface: a programmable multi-function touch plate (under the thumb of the right hand).
Among other features of the camera: a new Fv exposure mode, an electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 3.69 million pixels (0.76x magnification), a freely rotatable touch LCD monitor with a resolution of 2.1 million pixels with a diagonal of 3.2 ”.
The Dual Pixel CMOS AF autofocus system has 5655 points (with the ability to select them), focusing works with a –6 EV illumination with f / 1.2 lenses. There is an autofocus backlight. The rate of burst shooting is up to 8 frames / s, the minimum shutter speed is 1/8000 s.
Files are recorded on SD / SDHC / SDXC memory cards (including UHS-II), for which there is one slot.
Video recording can go in resolutions up to 4K @ 30p, stream up to 480 Mbps, output of 10-bit stream with color subsampling 4: 2: 2 via HDMI is possible. Supported by Canon Log.
The EOS R camera will go on sale in October 2018. Reference points - $ 2299 for the camera itself, $ 3399 - for a kit with an RF 24-105mm F4L IS lens.
Simultaneously with the Canon EOS R camera, four lenses of the new system are presented:
- RF 24-105mm F4L IS
- RF 50mm F1.2L
- RF 28-70mm F2L
- RF 35mm F1.8 IS Macro
In addition, three adapters will be available for full compatibility with EF, EF-S, TS-E, and MP-E ruler lenses. One adapter is the base, the other has a control ring, the third allows you to install filters in the slot between the lens and the camera body.
