Fujifilm X-E3: a week with an expert

Getting to know the camera

Fujifilm took an interesting step back in 2010, using the vintage design of film cameras with mechanical settings in digital cameras. This aroused great interest among photographers, which still does not wane. In the line of mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses, the company supports and develops two directions. The design of the first is stylized for SLR cameras, and the second for rangefinder. The new model of the mirrorless Fujifilm X-E3 , which will be discussed in this article, refers to the second one . The novelty is a logical step in the development of the line and has many updates and innovations, which I will talk about. Learn the price of Fujifilm X-E3 The X-E3 model, as already mentioned, is the continuation of the development of the Fujifilm line of mirrorless cameras in the layout and vintage style of the “rangefinders”. Their classic features are a flat top cover, mechanical controls on its right and a viewfinder on the rear left. And all this - for the sake of compactness without loss of functionality and convenience. Indeed, such a layout of the camera has been practiced for decades. Fujifilm X-E3 replaced the X-E2S, released in January 2016, which, in turn, was a slightly modernized version of the X-E2, which was born in the fall of 2013. So the upgrade line was more than expected. The most obvious change in the camera of the third-generation XE line was the new APS-C X-Trans CMOS III sensor with a resolution of 24 megapixels - the predecessors were a 16-megapixel version of X-Trans CMOS II. For those who actively shoot video, there is also good news: the X-E3 is capable of shooting 4K video (3840 x 2160 pixels) with a frequency of up to 30 frames / s and a bitrate of up to 100 Mbps. Among the other changes that will be discussed in the article are improvements in camera control, autofocus system and serial shooting, in wireless capabilities, etc. It is time to move on to a detailed acquaintance with the camera design.

Design, ergonomics, control

The rugged Fujifilm X-E3 case is made of magnesium alloy. The camera is offered in two colors - strict black and vintage silver-black. The first is more suitable for those who like to shoot without attracting attention, and the second will obviously appeal to fans of the vintage style of film cameras. At first glance, the camera layout remained the same as its predecessors. But in fact, in the X-E3 there are many changes in both design and management. To begin with, the built-in flash disappeared from the top panel. This made it possible to shift the “hot shoe” connector for external flashes to the left and place it above the optical axis of the lens. By the way, the camera comes with a folding flash EF-X8.

The shutter button, combined with the camera power lever, the reprogrammable Fn button and the exposure compensation input dial, as well as the shutter speed dial, remained at the usual place. The latter was made a little thinner and larger in diameter, it is convenient to work with it thanks to the smooth bevel of the panel on the left. A lever appeared under this dial to switch the camera to the fully automatic Advanced SR Auto mode. The same switch is in another modern model - Fujifilm X-T20 , but in the X-E2S, the button located to the left of the screen was used for this. Now the buttons are not there at all, they have moved to the space above the screen and to the right of it. Some of their functions have also changed. So, the rear control wheel is now responsible for scaling the image when viewing (the front one serves for scrolling). There is a second option - “smartphone”, using gestures familiar to the touch screen. In addition, there are special gestures. For example, by double tapping on the screen when viewing a picture, you can turn it on double zoom and then turn off just as quickly. The LCD screen is rigidly built into the case, its diagonal is 3 inches, and the resolution is 1.04 million pixels. Navipad disappeared from the back panel. But there was a convenient compact joystick, which is also pressed as a button to confirm some settings. The place for him was chosen very well: it’s comfortable to operate his thumb. Direct selection of the AF area using the joystick is very convenient! The camera’s grip has increased due to a convenient thumb stop, which, coupled with a relief pad in front of the same non-slip material, allows you to confidently hold the camera with one hand. To increase the camera’s grasp, you can also purchase the HG-XE3 grip handle, which is mounted in a tripod socket and does not interfere with the replacement of the battery or memory card.

There are two buttons on the tab-stop - for fixing the focus (AF-L) and calling up the quick settings menu (Q). On the left rear panel is an electronic viewfinder with an OLED sensor. It is equipped with a wheel for adjusting diopters (from ?2 to +4), as well as an IR sensor that turns off the screen when the eyepiece is brought to the eye. The EVI resolution is 2.36 million points, and the magnification is 0.62x. On the left side of the camera is a compartment protected by a cover, in which there is a micro-USB port for connecting to a PC, recharging the battery and powering the camera when shooting, a micro-HDMI connector and a microphone input. The battery compartment located below also has an SD card slot.
As you can see, the tripod socket is located very close to the edge of the compartment, so when shooting with a tripod, even a small tripod pad will block the hatch. However, here the severity of the problem is partially removed by the ability to recharge the battery (including during shooting) via the USB port from an external source. And the pictures can be copied wirelessly, which will be discussed later.

Functionality

As already mentioned, the LCD screen has become touch, although this function can be disabled in the menu to avoid accidental clicks. Among the additional features of touch control: the use of touches to select the focus area - Focus Area Selection function, focusing - Touch AF function or shooting by touching the screen - Touch Shot function. In addition, there is a Touch Function mode in which you can use up-down and left-right scrolling to call up pre-assigned functions. Using the drag and drop function, the touch screen can be used to change the position of the focus area without taking your eyes off the EVI. Settings allow you to set the active area of ??the touch screen: ALL (use the entire screen), Right (right half), Left (left half) or turn off the function. When sighting through an EVI, you can use the joystick to move the focus area.
