Fujinon XF 8-16mm f / 2.8 R LM WR review
The Fujinon XF 8-16mm f / 2.8 R LM WR has become the most wide-angle lens in the Fujifilm X system. Today, this ultra-wide angle with compensated geometry (this is not a fisheye!) In our test.

Of course, the system has long had successful ultra-wide angles : for example, Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS . But none of them can boast of a viewing angle of 121 ° diagonally.
The creators of this optical miracle managed not only to provide the widest viewing angle, but also to achieve a high aperture of f / 2.8. Recall that zooms from the world of a full frame with focal lengths of the order of 12 mm most often have an aperture of f / 4. So our hero will definitely be in demand by astrophotographers and fans of shooting interiors without a tripod, reporting photographers. The lens turned out to be really outstanding, at least in terms of characteristics. And what is it in real work, we will check in our test.
Fujinon XF 8-16mm f / 2.8 R LM WR quite expectedly came out large and heavy. It weighs 805 grams and has 88 mm in diameter. All this, combined with a high price, is a payment for the unique characteristics that we wrote about above. Any competitor from the world of a full frame will be heavier and, most likely, less aperture.
The lens is equipped with dust and moisture protection, it is important for field shooting. According to the manufacturer, the sealing elements are installed at 11 points in the structure. Guaranteed to work up to minus 10 degrees Celsius.
For autofocus, linear motors are used, as in other top-end lenses from Fujifilm. Fast and quiet focusing is their thing. Fujinon XF 8-16mm f / 2.8 R LM WR does not have an autofocus switch; the corresponding switch is located on the camera. There are three rings on the lens body: manual focusing (it’s electronic here), zoom, and aperture settings.
The front lens is so convex that it does not allow the installation of filters. Instead of the filter thread, an integrated hood. It is also impossible to install a light filter behind the rear lens.
When zooming, the front lens block moves a couple of centimeters inside the lens hood. The cover is used special, mounted on a hood.
The optical design of the Fujinon XF 8-16mm f / 2.8 R LM WR is complex even by modern standards. It uses 20 elements combined in 13 groups. A special field curvature correction mechanism is used, which is adjusted depending on the zoom position. The design has four aspherical lenses to reduce distortion and spherical aberration and six low-dispersed (including three with ultra-low dispersion) elements to reduce chromatic aberration.
Apparently, the creators of this lens had no illusions about the trade-offs between price and quality. Fujinon XF 8-16mm f / 2.8 R LM WR is packed with modern technology with one goal – to ensure high quality images. And more about that on the following pages.
