How to make a frame around a photo in Photoshop

How to make a frame around a photo in Photoshop

The frame in the photo allows you to separate the picture from the surrounding space and give it a more finished look. In this article, we will talk about how to make a frame around a photo in Photoshop.

Stroke Photos

The easiest way to make a frame in Photoshop is by using the properties of the layer. Open a photo in Adobe Photoshop. In the layer panel, right-click on the layer with our photo. If the layer panel is not visible, then you can open it using the menu item Window / “Window” ? Layers / “Layers” . If there is one layer in the photo, then it will be the main one. An icon in the form of a lock will appear next to its image on the panel of layers, which means blocking the layer in order to prevent accidental edits.
In order to unlock it, simply double-click on this layer with the mouse. The lock will disappear, and the layer itself will be called Layer 0 . After that, we click on the layer with the right mouse button and select the Blending Options item in the context menu .
The dialog box that appears scares the number of items a little, but we only need two of them. Stroke is responsible for adding a stroke around the edge of the frame . We find it in the left panel and checkmark it. After that, in the central part, you can set the stroke parameters:
  • Size - The thickness of the stroke in pixels. The higher the resolution of the photograph, the greater should be this value for a noticeable effect.
  • Position - The position of the stroke. Possible location inside, outside and in the center. We have a stroke around the edge of the frame, which means that all options, except for the location inside, do not make sense.
  • Blending Mode - The blending mode of the stroke.
  • Opacity - the density (opacity) of the stroke.
  • Color - color.
In principle, this is enough to draw a line of this or that thickness along the perimeter of the frame, but you can go even further and make the frame more creative. So, you can add volume to the frame using the Bevel & Emboss / Emboss settings . Their choice here is quite large, and the impact on each image is clearly displayed on the preview, so we suggest just trying different options and choosing the right one.

Inner frame

Open a photo in Adobe Photoshop. In order to make a white frame in Photoshop, you need to select the entire photo as a whole. This can be done either using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + A , or using the menu command Select / "Selection" ? All / "All" . After that, the whole picture will be circled by the so-called running ants, which are an alternation of white and black strokes. After the photo is selected around the perimeter, you need to make sure that the selection passes exactly where the frame is needed. To do this, use the command Select / “Selection” ? Modify / “Modification” ? Contract ... / “Compress ...” .
In the dialog box that appears, you will need to enter the indent in pixels from the edge of the frame on which the frame should be. Indentation will be made inward. The indentation value depends on how far from the edge you want to frame the photo, and on the resolution of the original image. Do not forget to check the Apply effect at canvas bounds checkbox , which indicates that you need to indent from the border.
Click Ok and see that the selection has shifted to the center of the frame. If the position of the future frame suits us, then move on, if not, cancel the selection using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + D and repeat all over again until we find the ideal position. When the desired position of the selection is selected, you just need to stroke on this path. To do this, use the Edit / Stroke ... / Stroke ... command .
In the dialog box that appears, set the stroke parameters: the thickness and color of the line, its position relative to the selection, and the overlay settings.
In this example, we indicated that the stroke should be 3 pixels thick and white. And it should be located in the center of the selection. This means that the line of selection in the form of "running ants" will pass through the center of the future stroke.

Frame with jagged edges.

How to make a beautiful frame in Photoshop? To do this, you can add a frame to the photo with uneven and torn edges. As in previous cases, make a selection indented from the edge of the frame.
After that, we switch to the quick mask mode either with the Q key or by clicking on the quick mask icon in the left toolbar.
The area for the frame is now highlighted in red. It remains to add uneven edges to it. To do this, we’ll use filters, which are abundant in Adobe Photoshop. This menu item Filter / «Filter» ? Filter Gallery ... / «Filter Gallery ..." .
To get the desired effect, we need filters from the Brush Strokes / Strokes block . We select the one that suits your taste and set parameters for it. The higher the resolution of the photo, the larger the parameter values ??should be, otherwise the effect will not be noticeable.
After applying the filter, torn edges are added to the red quick mask. We exit the quick mask mode by converting the mask into a selection by clicking on the quick mask icon.
Now invert the selection using the command Select / “Selection” ? Inverse / “Inversion” .
After that, click on the Delete key on the keyboard in order to delete the selected area. When deleting, Photoshop will prompt you to immediately fill instead of the deleted part of the photo. Specify which color to use for the fill.

Passepartout

All the methods described earlier in this article in one way or another contributed to cropping part of the photo and shifting the borders inside the frame. That is, part of the frame overlapped part of the photo. Now consider the method that allows you to add a white frame to the photo - an analogue of the passe-partout. As before, open the photo in Adobe Photoshop and unlock it from the main layer.
After that, we need to increase the size of the canvas, for which we use the command Image / "Image" ? Canvas Size ... / "Size of the canvas ..." .
In the dialog box that appears, specify the new canvas size. It is not necessary to enlarge the canvas evenly horizontally and vertically. Here you can experiment.
After applying the command, the canvas size will increase and new areas will be transparent. It remains only to fill them with the desired color.
To do this, create a new empty layer in the layer panel. It will automatically appear above the main layer, we will need to drag it down with the mouse.
After that, just fill the new layer with the desired color.

Insert a photo into a frame

As a last resort, consider how to make a beautiful frame in Photoshop. On stocks and free resources you can find quite a lot of different frames for photos. They can be in PNG or PSD format. But when accessing such resources, be sure to check the license for a specific file with a frame. It may mean just free use or an indispensable indication of the author. So, let's say you find a suitable frame and open it in Adobe Photoshop. With the second document, open the photo that you want to insert into the frame.
Thereafter moving a document with frame select its entirety by the combination of keys Ctrl + A , then the copy selection Ctrl + C , switch to the photo file and paste the copied frame to Ctrl + V .
Due to the fact that the size and format of the frame and the photograph were different, it was not possible to insert accurately. Therefore, you need to resize the frame and fit the photo under it. Make the layer with the frame active by clicking on it with the mouse, and use the transformation tool to change the size of the frame Edit / “Edit” ? Free Transform / “Free Transformation” .
Depending on the size and proportions of the frame and the photograph, it is sometimes more convenient to resize the photograph. This is done similarly.
