Samsung in 2019 decided to greatly simplify and reorganize its smartphone series. So, Galaxy J smartphones have been forgotten, the Galaxy A line has expanded, and now smartphones with this letter represent not only the middle price segment, but also the budget one. In the series, the Galaxy A10 (starting at 9,990 rubles) and the Galaxy A80 (cost nearly 50,000 rubles) coexist. To understand, we will prepare a separate material - a kind of excursion and at the same time an overview of the entire Galaxy A series. And today we will talk about the Samsung Galaxy A50 smartphone. Samsung Galaxy A50 - a strong middle peasant in the A-line. This is no longer a representative of the budget price segment: according to its capabilities, it just does not reach the conditional flagships of the series - A70 and A80. A triple main camera unit is installed here, there is a scanner under the AMOLED display. Samsung Galaxy A50 photo review

By tradition, we begin testing a new smartphone in the most ordinary scenario - in good lighting conditions. Usually shooting during the day is not a problem for smartphones. But in the case of the Samsung Galaxy A50, not enough high detail was observed with one hundred percent crop. The overall not very high image quality is especially noticeable if you bring signs and street names closer. We are used to the opposite for Samsung devices: when a strong oversharp appears on the images during post-processing. Here, for some reason, everything is the other way around. But this is the only complaint. The color rendition is correct, the dynamic range is quite wide.

SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 40, F2.2, 1/1021 s, 13.0 mm equiv.
We immediately started shooting both on a regular (26 mm (equiv.)) And on an ultra-wide-angle camera (12 mm (equiv.)), In order to evaluate all the capabilities of the smartphone. In general, the pictures from the two lenses are about the same in quality: the same colors, the same exposure, there are no visible problems, except for lower resolution. Even when shooting on the main camera with a resolution of 12 megapixels, the difference is striking.
The interface in the Samsung camera is very simple, and in the settings it is impossible to select the resolution of the picture: it is set only from above when setting the aspect ratio of 3: 4H (25 MP), 3: 4 (12 MP), 9:16 (about 8 MP), 1: 1 (about 9 megapixels), Full (full-screen shooting with an aspect ratio of 9: 19.5 (about 8 megapixels)).

SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 40, F2.2, 1/808 s, 13.0 mm equiv.
The shooting was carried out in the default mode: most of the photos were taken with an aspect ratio of 4: 3 in a resolution of 12 megapixels, but some of the pictures turned out to be stretched to full screen, that is, the device itself switched depending on the shooting mode. Paradoxically, we did not take any photos with the maximum resolution, since it was not selected by default.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 40, F1.7, 1/3509 s, 26.0 mm equiv.

SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 40, F1.7, 1/1524 s, 26.0 mm equiv.
The third camera in the Samsung Galaxy A50 has an auxiliary function: a 5-megapixel sensor is responsible for determining the depth of the scene and is used in the "Portrait" and "Live Focus" modes. In them, the Samsung Galaxy A50 does its job perfectly, correctly clipping the object and correctly blurring the background. Interestingly, the Galaxy A50 does not seek to draw glare and scales from the back, it imitates the correct blur.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 40, F1.7, 1/2500 s, 26.0 mm equiv.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 40, F1.7, 1/294 s, 26.0 mm equiv.
The Galaxy A50 also has a panorama mode that does a good job: there are no problems with gluing. Difficulties may arise when shooting a landscape with a bright sun, for sure there will be overexposures. And still it is worth paying attention to possible geometric distortions.
SM-A505FM Installation: 13.0 mm equiv.
At first we thought that we were photographing the panorama opposite the Grand Opera in Paris. But it turned out that this is a frame with an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9. Moreover, both images (both on a conventional and an ultra-wide-angle camera) convincingly mimicked under the panorama.

SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 40, F2.2, 1/702 s, 13.0 mm equiv.
The rooms received the correct color rendition, the exact work of the focus, but again lacked the clarity and detail on both cameras.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 40, F1.7, 1/132 s, 26.0 mm equiv.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 64, F2.2, 1/50 s, 13.0 mm equiv.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 320, F2.2, 1/25 s, 13.0 mm equiv.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 400, F2.2, 1/25 s, 13.0 mm equiv.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 100, F1.7, 1/50 s, 26.0 mm equiv.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 64, F1.7, 1/50 s, 26.0 mm equiv.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 80, F2.2, 1/50 s, 13.0 mm equiv.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 50, F1.7, 1/50 s, 26.0 mm equiv.
But in dark rooms and in rooms with complex light, the device worked well, and this despite the lack of optical image stabilization. Images from the main camera are clearly superior in quality to ultra-wide-angle ones.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 200, F2.2, 1/25 s, 13.0 mm equiv.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 50, F1.7, 1/50 s, 26.0 mm equiv.
In dark rooms, the Samsung Galaxy A50 proved to be very confident: the right colors, accurate autofocus and good image quality in the absence of optical stabilization. But again there are flaws in detail. Oddly enough, an ultra-wide-angle camera showed itself very poorly in the dark.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 200, F1.7, 1/50 s, 26.0 mm equiv.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 320, F2.2, 1/25 s, 13.0 mm equiv.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 200, F2.2, 1/25 s, 13.0 mm equiv.
SM-A505FM Installations: ISO 160, F1.7, 1/50 s, 26.0 mm equiv.
Resolution front camera Samsung Galaxy A50 is 25 megapixels. As in the case with the main camera, by default it shoots in a resolution of 12 megapixels (we got pictures in this resolution). The quality of the selfie is quite high, there is almost no beauty, the detail is at the level, but again there is not enough detail and clarity.

Samsung Galaxy A50. conclusions

Samsung Galaxy A50 is an interesting gadget; inside the Galaxy A series, it occupies a virtually central position, being a genuine representative of the middle class in 2019, when the criteria for evaluating smartphones were a triple camera, a scanner under the display, USB Type-C and a large battery. Yes, much of the above is debatable, but why not implement these ideas. We would add an AMOLED display to this list, but it is not possible to find middle-class devices and even cheaper smartphones from Samsung. So, in the Galaxy A series, displays with Super AMOLED-matrix are on all smartphones, except the most affordable A10. Samsung Galaxy A50 looks nice. It is a pity that the body, as well as the chassis, are made of plastic. Note the overflow of the rear panel, which looks like a flagship S-series. Among the unconditional advantages of the device are a large number of internal memory (64 or 128 GB to choose from), a separate microSD slot, a high-quality Super AMOLED display and a fingerprint scanner under the screen. Of course, there were compromises: here the plastic case mentioned earlier, and the processor are less powerful than in the flagships, and the lack of dust and moisture protection. But let's be honest: the Galaxy A50 has not lost its vital chips. Unfortunately, there are questions to the camera. It is clear that one of the compromises is the lack of a zoom lens. But this is done to reduce the cost. There are completely different questions to the operation of the main camera: we don’t understand where the Samsung-branded re-sharping went, why the algorithms began to make the picture softer (because of this, detail and clarity suffer). Also, the main camera lacks optical image stabilization (this does not interfere with fairly high-quality images in low light conditions). But we noted the quality work in the "Portrait" and "Live Focus" modes. The super wide angle camera works well. In the pictures, the “barrel", characteristic of the focal length of 12 mm, is completely invisible. But the resolution is severely lacking in resolution, which is why quite a few details are lost, especially when shooting in low light conditions. The camera interface is not very logical and understandable, as a result of which many test frames were shot with a strange aspect ratio. And when the 4: 3 ratio was chosen, we did not shoot with the maximum resolution, because we did not pay attention to how it was chosen. The over-wide pumped up at night, but the rest of the camera performed well in different conditions. The front camera of stars from the sky is not enough, but it does its job well, albeit without a twist.

Pros:

  • high-quality Super AMOLED display;
  • universal triple camera;
  • good power;
  • 3.5 mm audio jack
  • high-quality assembly;
  • a large number of internal memory and the ability to expand memory using microSD (separate slot);
  • fingerprint scanner under the screen;
  • convenient user interface.

Minuses:

  • no optical image stabilization;
  • in some places illogical camera interface;
  • weak work of an ultra-wide-angle camera in the dark;
  • a general lack of detail and clarity in the pictures, weak operation of the algorithms;
  • plastic case.
